Course description
English for Medicine is carefully designed for doctors, nurses, medical students and other medical professionals who need to communicate with patients and medical colleagues.
Course aim and objectives:
The course aims to help busy doctors, medical researchers and students to improve their fluency in English and build confidence in understanding and speaking English in medical context.
It aims to give participants the opportunity to learn specialised vocabulary and expressions, to activate passive vocabulary, to learn the English pronunciation of medical terms and to increase fluency and confidence in using English in professional contexts.
Duration

listening to audio and video recorded medical talks and taking notes
reading and summarizing medical journal articles
writing case reports and short summaries
pronunciation practice in the language laboratory
A tutorial at Bournemouth hospital as well as to private clinics in Bournemouth area will be included in the course learning techniques.
Further techniques:
Preparation and presentation of short talks.
Group discussion of case problems, ethical questions, etc.
Course materials:
Bournemouth City College teachers are delighted to recommend the most effective and appropriate materials for students. The syllabus for classes and self-study is based upon authentic materials taken from a variety of sources. Additional materials will be used to reflect the interests and level of the group in question. Other audio, video and computer materials are available in the college.
Entry requirement:
Our teachers will test the students to determine their actual English level on the starting date. Students should be on level 4 (intermediate) to make good progress during the course.
Course structure and teaching arrangements
A maximum of 10 students per class with a total of 22.5 contact hours per week. Classes take place between 9.00-17.30 plus the opportunity to join in a social programme that offers extra-curricular activities each week.
Methods of assessment
The final course mark is based on submitted coursework and an exam. The coursework is an essay, presentation or report that the student has to prepare and submit to the college.
